I Am History

By J. D. Hearn

First published 2026

In the ruins of New York City, Henry may be the last human alive. The streets are empty, the buildings silent, and the nights crawling with pale, cannibalistic creatures that fear light but hunger for anything that moves. By day, he scavenges what he can from the city's abandoned shells. By night, he climbs onto a lonely stage and performs stand-up comedy, because laughter-and light-are the only weapons keeping the monsters and his own unraveling mind at bay. With a different pair of shoes on each day, being a sole survivor comes at a cost. Henry's memory is slipping. The map of the city has become a maze, and he has no guide but the voices in his head-and the occasional ghost. Objects appear he does not remember owning, and moments vanish from his past. In the darkness, he sometimes glimpses something intelligent watching him, shaping his mind in ways he cannot yet understand. As the nights grow longer and his routines grow more desperate, Henry is forced to confront the truth about himself and the world he inhabits. Alone, vulnerable, and running out of time, he must rely on his wit, his courage, and a carefully honed madness that may be the only thing keeping him alive.
