Field season
First published 2027
"When Caroline and Paul, two aspiring archaeologists, meet during their first field season, they form an undeniable yet turbulent connection that will define their lives for the next fifty years. At 20, Caroline is an undergrad caught in the shadow of her famous archaeologist father's reputation. Paul is a charming Frenchman who quickly becomes a friend to all, yet refuses to speak of his life back in Paris. The two were supposed to travel together before the upcoming field season, one that will be marked by months spent in close-quarters researching, excavating, and cataloging at a dig site. But after weeks exchanging letters in preparation for the trip, all goes awry when Paul makes a choice that throws their relationship off its newly formed axis. When they finally arrive at the site, Caroline and Paul attempt to rebuild their nascent friendship in between picking through shards of pottery and excavating what may-or may not be-ancient ruins. Conversation that starts as stilted soon becomes a shorthand between them, and an allegiance forms as they navigate their time in the field.
