"A Single Nation: National History in Angolan Fiction, Independence to 2025 is the second volume of narrative history of the development of a distinctive national prose tradition in colonial and postcolonial Angola. Like the first volume, Fissured Ground, it treats on issues of decolonization, race, the legacies of the slave trade and the role of a culturally and often racially syncretized bourgeoisie in imagining a modern African nation through literature, only now in the context of Angola as an independent nation-state. Concentrating on the first fifty years of Angolan independence, this book focuses on the national enterprise in the late 20th and early 21st centuries, paying particular attention to Angola’s military struggle against apartheid South Africa, the nation’s Cold War-era transatlantic cultural, political and military collaboration with Cuba, the civil war of the 1990s and, after the achievement of peace in 2002, the attempt to reconcile national specificity with the demands of 21st-century global markets, both literary and commercial.
